Topic outline
The 2020 International *Virtual* Design Workshop
- Due to COVID-19, the usual ISDW was postponed until October and held online. Thirty-six students from Singapore (Nanyang Polytechnic), Korea (Sangmyung University), and Japan (Future University Hakodate, Shibaura Institute of Technology) participated in a week of group work. The students were divided into groups of six and analyzed the changes in life and problems due to COVID-19 using the KJ method, and proposed products to help them. Students used Zoom, LINE, Miro, and Discord to communicate and collaborate.
Virtual Communication
Students communicated mainly in English. In the beginning, they used video calls for group work, but there were some problems such as not being able to speak English immediately and everyone being silent when using video calls. There were some groups that used video calls, but there were also many groups that mainly used text communication using LINE or Miro. Each group adopted the communication tool that suited them best, and in the end, all groups were able to come up with good ideas. Face-to-face group work and online group work had a significant impact on the final project and presentation.
